Alex McLeish has urged Danny Rohl and his disconsolate Rangers stars to keep the faith – insisting they’ll become legends like his Helicopter Sunday heroes if they can salvage this season’s title bid.

The former gaffer and his 2005 title winners secured their status as Ibrox immortals when they mounted a remarkable fight back to snatch the crown from Celtic’s grasp a little over two decades ago.

But it’s Hearts leading the way this year, with Gers now slumped in third four points adrift with just four games remaining after Sunday’s disastrous defeat at home to Motherwell.

McLeish, though, is refusing to give up hope that Rohl’s team can pull off their own title turnaround – starting with Monday’s crucial capital clash against Derek McInnes’ Tynecastle table toppers.

Looking back on his own side’s triumph – sealed with a win over Hibs as Martin O’Neill’s team crashed and burned at Fir Park – the ex-Gers boss told Record Sport: “Going into that game at Eastern Road, we’d been written off.

“And this Rangers team right now has been written off too. So they’ve got that challenge ahead of them, similar to what we had.

“We just rallied as a team. We kept things very tight in the camp and had that real sense of unity.

“We got the victories that we needed to win the championship on that famous day.

“What happened on Helicopter Sunday made legends of everyone involved.

“Let’s hope the current boys can pull off something similar. If they can, that’s how they’ll be remembered too. Danny’s rallied the team to a great level.

“I remember watching this Old Firm victory in a pub in Lanzarote a couple of months ago. To see that performance that day, I really felt that we had a hell of a good chance of winning the title if we could continue with that kind of impressive, fast play.

“But the players have to really believe that they can do it.”
