Is YNW Melly free? Release motion with judge after Thursday hearing

(This story was updated to add new information.)
Florida rapper YNW Melly, born Jamell Maurice Demons, appeared in Broward County court for a hearing on multiple motions April 30, including one regarding release from jail while awaiting his January 2027 murder trial.
Demons’ attorneys requested he be allowed to appear in civilian clothing, due to the uncomfortable nature of the jail attire as well as media exposure that could expose potential jurors to his appearance, a motion filed April 21 reads. A judge granted the request. Demons’ family provided the clothing.
Demons has been in jail since his February 2019 arrest and has alleged mistreatment and extensive periods of isolation.
Presiding Judge Martin S. Fein adjourned the proceedings just after 3 p.m. Thursday after hearing from the prosecution and defense. Fein will now consider YNW Melly’s bond request. It’s unclear when his decision will be announced.
Here’s what we know so far.

Jamell Demons, aka YNW Melly, 19, of Gifford, and Cortlen Henry, aka YNW Bortlen, 20, of Vero Beach, were arrested and charged with murder in the deaths of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams, Miramar police announced Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019. This video was created in 2019.
What was YNW Melly’s April 30 hearings about?
According to a Notice of Hearing from the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida, Demons’ April 30 hearing included the following matters:
- Motion for an Arthur Hearing and Incorporated Memorandum of Law
- Arthur hearings determine whether or not a defendant charged with serious offenses that may not be bondable, such as violent crimes, can be released before trial. Since such offenses do not automatically qualify for bail, the hearing gives the defense a chance to advocate for pretrial release, according to the website of criminal defense attorney Luke Newman.
- Motion to Bifurcate Sentencing Enhancement Allegation from Indictment
- On April 28, Demons’ defense team filed a motion to Bifurcate Sentencing Enhancement Allegation From Indictment regarding the state’s intent to introduce evidence of Demons’ alleged gang involvement.
- The State of Florida filed a response April 28 as to why the defense motion to separate the sentencing enhancement allegation should be denied.
- Here’s what they said: “The defendant argues that introducing evidence to show Demons was a member of a criminal gang would be extremely prejudicial to his right to a fair trial, however Florida Courts have recognized that this evidence is admissible in trial for many reasons, including to prove motive, intent, or because the evidence is inextricably intertwined with the charged crime.”
- “All evidence introduced against a defendant in trial is in essence prejudicial. It should only be excluded when it is substantially outweighed by the probative value, and does not prove things such as motive, intent, or context.”
- Motion to Preclude the State from Introducing Statements Made by Cortlen Henry
- Demons’ team requested the court “enter an order prohibiting the State from introducing into evidence any out of court statements made by Cortlen Henry,” according to court documents filed April 22.
