Where is Michael Jackson’s doctor now? Life after his conviction

  • Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of Michael Jackson’s death, currently lives in Trinidad and Tobago after serving two years of his sentence in the United States.

  • After losing his medical licenses in California, Nevada, and Texas, Murray opened the DCM Medical Institute in 2023 in his home country to continue his work in the health sector.

  • Despite his release in 2013, the doctor faces constant legal and administrative battles to attempt to practice medicine officially in different jurisdictions.

Fifteen years after the verdict found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter, the name Conrad Murray remains intrinsically linked to the tragic end of the “King of Pop”. After serving his sentence and facing the revocation of his professional credentials in U.S. territory, the man who accompanied Michael Jackson in his final days has sought to rebuild his career away from the Hollywood spotlight, taking refuge in his native Trinidad and Tobago.

The road to tragedy in 2009

The relationship between Murray and the global idol began in 2006, but it became formal in 2009 when he was hired as a personal physician for the This Is It tour. With an agreed salary of $150,000 per month, Murray’s mission was to care for the health of an artist pressured by the demands of his return to the stage. However, on June 25 of that year, the world stopped; Michael Jackson passed away in Los Angeles due to acute propofol intoxication.

Investigations determined that Murray administered the anesthetic, used to treat the singer’s chronic insomnia, without the necessary monitoring equipment. Although the defense argued that Jackson himself might have injected an extra dose, the prosecution proved gross negligence, leading a jury to find Murray guilty in November 2011.

From prison to Trinidad and Tobago

Sentenced to four years in prison, Murray was released in 2013 after serving nearly half of his sentence thanks to a good behavior credit system. Upon his release, he encountered a devastating professional reality: his licenses to practice medicine in California and Nevada were suspended, while in Texas, they had been permanently revoked.

After a period living near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he claimed to provide free consultations, the doctor decided to return to the Caribbean. In Trinidad and Tobago, his integration was not easy; in 2018, he even sued the local Medical Council for denying him the official registration necessary to practice his profession legally.

The present: The DCM Medical Institute

Despite the obstacles and the stigma of his past with Michael Jackson, Murray managed to open the DCM Medical Institute in El Socorro in May 2023. This medical and training center represents his final attempt to stay active in the healthcare field. According to statements to the local press, Murray chose to create his own structure after failing in his attempts to join other established medical institutions.

Today, at 73 years old, Conrad Murray maintains a low profile, focused on his institute and private care, far from the status of “doctor to the stars” he once held. His current life serves as a testimony to a man who, though physically free, continues to deal with the professional and legal consequences of that fateful summer of 2009.
