‘It drives you mad’: Swindon residents angry at noisy manhole cover

The steel cover, which allows Thames Water access to its subterranean infrastructure, is at the corner of Rother Close and Thames Avenue in Haydon Wick.

It seems not to be sitting properly and every time a car, van, lorry or bus drives over it, it makes a high-pitched clank.

Paul Head said: “You can really hear it at 2am or 3am, and you lie there awake for hours, just waiting for the next one.

“It drives you mad.”

Another resident, Ian Styles said: “Now we’re coming into the warmer months, you can hear it all day if you’re outside in the garden, or if you have the windows open.

“My wife works from home, and it’s a real problem for her.”

The pair say that the larger drain cover was also noisy last summer, and Thames Water engineers came out to fix it.

Mr Styles added: “I asked if they were going to do the little one, but they said it wasn’t on their sheet, so left it.”

Mr Head added: “I reported it in August last year and since then they’ve sent someone out five times, but he looks at it, takes pictures, videos it, and stands on it, and goes away; and nothing has been done.”

Haydon Wick ward Councillor Stanka Wilson took up the issue and said: “Thames Water came out on Saturday very early, and put out three-way control temporary traffic lights.

“But the actual work wasn’t done, and they took the lights and cones away on Monday. They could have asked the council to extend the permit, but it seems they didn’t.”

Cllr Wilson added: “The council has granted a new permit for 2nd May, and I was informed Thames Water have updated their plan, and the works will now take place next Monday and Tuesday.

“Thames Water have agreed to provide manual control of the temporary traffic signals on Tuesday morning to help minimise traffic disruption.”

Mr Head added: “I hope that this time they actually do the work, because it’s a terrible waste of resources to keep coming out but not do anything about it.”

Thames Water has been contacted for its response.

Councillor Wilson is standing in the local elections for Haydon Wick ward.
