Swansea is set to lose one of its most prominent retail stores in a month’s time, it has been confirmed. The Marks & Spencer outlet on Oxford Street, at the very heart of the city, has been a major destination for shoppers in Swansea for many years.
However, the retail giant announced earlier this year that prolonged underperformance has led to the decision to shut its doors. The company has now confirmed that its Swansea store will close for good on Saturday, May 30. Approximately 92 members of staff were employed at the store when confirmation of the closure was made in February.
There is hope, however, that the company may open a different premises elsewhere in the city. For the latest Swansea news, sign up to our newsletter here.
A spokeswoman for M&S told Wales Online on Thursday: “Our M&S Swansea city centre store will close on Saturday, May 30.
“As previously announced, this decision forms part of our plans to reshape our store estate so we can invest in stores that better meet the needs of our customers.
“We remain committed to serving customers in Swansea through our nearby stores and online, and are working closely with Swansea Council and other local partners to explore opportunities for a future M&S presence in the city.”
The closure will prompt renewed concerns regarding high street retail in Swansea city centre, given that M&S has occupied such a substantial space for so many years.
A spokesman for Swansea Council said: “We are disappointed that M&S has decided to close its store at the end of May. However, we are continuing to work with M&S to find a new site for them in the city.”
