Gillingham 1-0 Shrewsbury Town – McCleary scores in final game

Garath McCleary came off the bench to score in second-half stoppage time to give Gillingham a last day victory over Shrewsbury in League Two.

The former Wycombe winger guided an effort into the corner from 25 yards to give Gareth Ainsworth’s side all three points at Priestfield.

It was the hosts who created the first chance of note with Sam Vokes, making his final professional appearance, holding up the play on the edge of the box before offloading to Robbie McKenzie.

His shot was on target but lacked power, allowing Will Brook to gather.

At the other end, Thomas Sang produced an excellent cross from the right wing but the header of Josh Ruffels was guided over. Iwan Morgan then went even closer, striking the post with an effort from 18 yards.

Ronan Hale had a goal-bound effort for the Gills well blocked early in the second half before John Marquis missed a golden opportunity for Shrewsbury.

He received the ball inside the box, centrally and unmarked, but somehow with the goal at his mercy he placed an effort over from a couple of yards.

Substitute Tommy McDermott and Morgan both went close for the visitors, but McCleary wrapped up the points in the closing stages with an impressive finish from 25 yards.
