Florida Still Has Redistricting Laws. It’s Just Ignoring Them

Florida this week joined the growing list of state legislatures to pass a gerrymandered map that favors the party in power. Lawmakers had to violate the state constitution to do it.

Under the Fair Districts amendments, approved by 63% of the state’s voters in 2010, the Florida Constitution prohibits redistricting plans “with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent.” Governor Ron DeSantis and his attorneys have said they think some of the provisions violate the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution and the entire amendment should be invalidated.
