Gas stations battle with low prices in Delta

DELTA, Ohio (WTVG) – Two gas stations on State Route 109 engaged in a price war that brought gas prices down to $2.63 per gallon while prices remained sky high nationwide.
Staff at the Country Corral travel center said the competition started Thursday morning and cars were lined up to the street for hours.
“We happened to see the sign and I thought I was hallucinating,” Eric Wong, who was on a road trip from Pittsburgh, said.
Wendy Wyse traveled from Archbold to fill up.
“I guess they’re having some kind of battle between the truck stops, so I’m like heck, I’ll come out and take advantage of it.”
Staff at Country Corral said the Love’s across the street opened Thursday. They said Love’s prices were above $4 a gallon but a few cents below Country Corral’s, which started the competition. Country Corral responded by lowering their price a few more cents. The stations went back and forth to see who could get the lowest.
“It’s crazy, I can’t believe these guys are doing it, because everyone else is 5 bucks a gallon,” James Gahn, a customer with Country Corral, said.
Some people traveled upwards of 20 miles from nearby towns to get fuel. Others saw the sign from the turnpike.
Miranda Twichel, from New York, said she saw a different station advertising $4.19 per gallon.
“We saw somewhere else said $4.19 and I was like ‘well, we’re only at like half a tank’ so we saw it and I said ‘does that say 2?’” Twichel said.
Some customers brought gas cans with them.
“I have yard equipment I have to run and son has vehicles and I keep gas, so get it while it’s good,” Jeff Hartzell said.
Staff at Country Corral said the battle would end when one station raises the price or runs out of gas. Country Corral plans to get another truckload, Friday and staff said they would stay in the competition as long as they could.
Bobbi Grabarczyk, a customer at Country Corral, said the prices she’s seeing around town are unprecedented.
“All 4 of my kids are starting to drive and I told them I never thought in my lifetime I’d see gas at 5 dollars a gallon — California yes, but not northwest Ohio,” Grabarczyk said.
As of Friday evening, both Love’s and Country Corral have their prices listed at $4.79.
