Seattle Mariners scratch Raleigh from lineup, recall catcher

The Seattle Mariners announced star catcher Cal Raleigh was removed from the lineup before Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

A factor that can help Cole Young earn All-Star nod

Soon after, the team announced it recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma and placed infielder Will Wilson on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left thumb.

The team has yet to give a reason as to why Raleigh was pulled from the lineup.

Raleigh was originally slated to be behind the plate and hit second in the order. Mitch Garver is getting the start at catcher in place of Raleigh and will bat eighth against Royals right-hander Seth Lugo.

Raleigh, the American League MVP runner-up last season, has played in all 33 games for the Mariners this season, including 32 starts. He entered Saturday hitting .186 with a .652 OPS, seven homers and four doubles.

Pereda, a minor league free agent signing in January, put together a strong first month in Tacoma. The 30-year-old catcher was hitting .333 with an .844 OPS, two homers and two doubles in 23 games. He also had nearly as many walks (11) and strikeouts (12).

Pereda has appeared in 50 major league games over parts of two seasons with the Miami Marlins, Athletics and Minnesota Twins. He has a career .241 batting average and .595 OPS with six doubles and no homers.

Wilson, 27, has played in two games for the Mariners this season, going 1 for 5 with a home run.
