Manhunt underway after suspect reportedly shot by deputies flees scene, crashes in Tacoma

Pierce County investigators are searching for a suspect accused of fleeing sheriff’s deputies during an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning.

Deputies found a man slumped over in a vehicle near 72nd St. E and 9th Ave. Ct. E in Tacoma around 2 a.m. Sunday. Deputies identified the man as a suspect with multiple felony warrants, including second-degree assault, eluding police, and escape from community custody, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT).

According to PCFIT, the man woke up and started ramming vehicles to escape. The suspect allegedly drove at a deputy.

Shots were fired, but no deputies were hit by gunfire, PCFIT confirmed.

Deputies found the suspect’s vehicle crashed and abandoned a few minutes later at a home in the 900 block of 85th St. E. Nearby residents reportedly called 911 to report a man had shown up at their homes with blood on him and asking for help.

PCFIT said other people reported a man matching the suspect’s description had unlawfully entered homes and left after being confronted.

Authorities used drones and a K9 unit in an extensive search, but PCFIT said deputies have not found the suspect.

Surrounding residents are urged to secure their homes and cars and call 911 with any information.

Per protocol, PCFIT is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
