Work begins on new road tunnel to Bluewater

Construction work has finally begun on a new 75 metre bus tunnel linking thousands of new homes to Bluewater shopping centre.

The £25.5 million road will run beneath the B255 Bean Road and upon completion will allow Fastrack buses to access the shopping center from new housing and avoid a lengthy detour. Pedestrians and cyclists will also be able to use it.

Fastrack route E has recently benefited from a new road built across the vast Ebbsfleet Village site. Upon completion of  the tunnel it can continue onto Bluewater offering a connection from the centre to Ebbsfleet station via new housing.

Approved in 2020 it’s taken six years to start as high inflation led to cost increases. Kent County Council had paused the project in 2023.

That challenge has finally been overcome and the project is expected to take 18 months to complete. Erith are constructing the tunnel.

As for housing at Ebbsfleet Village it’s been slow going for the past 20+ years. Out of a planned 15,000 dwellings around 5,000 had completed by the end of 2025.
