Harrison Ford Has Co-Created a Glenmorangie Whisky (and You Can Try This One at Home)

What’s better than a new whisky for your evening routine? A new whisky that has been co-created by Harrison Ford.

That’s right. Not satisfied with simply ruling the galaxies in Star Wars or saving the museum sector in Indiana Jones, the American actor has collaborated with Scottish whisky makers Glenmorangie to create a dram especially suited to his tastes.

It’s not wholly unexpected: you may recall Ford’s campaign, Once Upon a Time in Scotland, with Glenmorangie from last year, in which the actor donned a kilt and explored the Highlands. Over 12 slightly meta and genuinely educational episodes, Ford learnt all about the company’s heritage. For both Ford and Glenmorangie, both legends in their own industry galaxies, this is a delightful next step and — great news — one you can taste for yourself.

Ford worked with Glenmorangie’s Dr Bill Lumsden MBE, who has an extremely enviable job title: director of whisky creation. Together they worked out the actor’s favourite flavours by testing out different casks. In the months that followed, Dr Lumsden sent samples across the Atlantic before they arrived at a final recipe.

“In keeping with our signature style — and Harrison’s — the Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition is very elegant and smooth,” says Dr Lumsden. “But since Harrison also likes his whisky with a little bite, we layered classic bourbon casks with the tang and structure of toasted Portuguese red wine casks.”

Ford certainly seemed to enjoy himself. “I loved my time at Glenmorangie, and have enormous respect for the team at the Distillery,” he said. “They are true craftspeople.” And as for the taste? “It’s nice. It’s very nice.” That’s enough for us.

How Best to Enjoy It

This whisky mixes what you know about Glenmorangie’s typical elegance with a tangy note or two. Think: citrus notes, hints of apricot, butter candy and a long finish reminiscent of orange oil, leather and oak tannin. The edition is, as Dr Lumsden notes, “timeless and endlessly surprising… much like Harrison himself.”

Our serving suggestion? Neat. This is a smooth-drinking whisky — even if you’re usually an on-the-rocks kinda guy, you’ll likely find this pretty approachable. A drop of water if you like, but certainly no mixers. And if you can’t get yourself on a windswept walk around some world-class scenery, well, why not treat yourself in the comfort of your sitting room?

As for viewing while you sip, you could switch on one of Ford’s many screen adventures. But why not watch the newest episode in the Once Upon a Time in Scotland series? Directed again by actor/filmmaker Joel Edgerton, it takes place in Ford’s home state of Wyoming as he tries his very own whisky for the first time. It will almost be like you’re tasting it alongside the man himself.
