Man, child hurt after US Secret Service shooting near Washington Monument

A man is injured after a shooting involving a U.S. Secret Service agent in Southwest DC, not far from the Washington Monument, according to the U.S. Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

According to the Secret Service, plainclothes agents spotted a man near the White House carrying a firearm. Agents then went to make contact with the man, but he took off running.

During the chase, investigators said the man opened fire on the Secret Service officers who then returned fire. The man was taken to the hospital, but officials did not provide details on his condition. A child in the area was also hit during the gunfire, but is expected to be OK.

The incident happened near the intersection of 15th Street SW and Independence Avenue.

The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, according to the Associated Press.

D.C. Police said the man was conscious and taken to the hospital.

A witness tells 7News a motorcade went by moments before the gunfire, but it is unclear if the two events are related. The Secret Service confirmed it was Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade.

Police have closed 15th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Maine Avenue SW. They also closed Independence Avenue SW from 14th Street to 15th Street SW, including the on-ramp. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
