San Diego Padres (20-13, 2nd in NL West)

The Padres had lost four in a row before salvaging a game on Sunday against the White Sox. They are a half-game behind the Dodgers in the division. The Padres dropped two of three to the Giants in the second series of the season at Petco Park.

San Francisco Giants (13-21, 5th in NL West)

The Giants have lost six in a row and are tied with the Red Sox with the third-worst record in the majors. Their minus-34 run differential is second worst, ahead of only the Phillies (minus-43), prompting the team to call up top prospect Bryce Eldridge and C/3B prospect Jesus Rodriguez.

San Diego: 3B Manny Machado has three homers and a 1.226 OPS over the last week, while 3B Miguel Andujar has two homers and a .984 OPS over that stretch. On the flip side, 2B Jake Cronenworth is 1-for-15 over the last week (.192 OPS) and both OF Jackson Merrill (.509) and OF Ramón Laureano (.426 OPS) are in deep slumps. In the bullpen, only RHP Jason Adam (2.70 ERA) and RHP Jeremiah Estrada (0.00 ERA) have ERAs under 3.00 over the last week, while RHP Ron Marinaccio (10.38) and LHP Kyle Hart (10.80 ERA) have struggled over the last seven days.

San Francisco: The Giants rank 29th in OPS (.642), 20th in rotation ERA (4.37) and second in bullpen ERA (3.01). The Giants don’t have any homers over the last week and only have two hitters with an OPS over .680 over that stretch: DH Casey Schmitt (.810) and OF Heliot Ramos (.725). LHP Matt Gage (1.29 ERA) leads the bullpen with 16 appearances) and RHPs Caleb Kilian (0.60 ERA), Ryan Walker (4.61 ERA) and Keaton Winn (2.63 ERA).

Pitching matchups

Monday

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (3-0, 2.94 ERA)   |   The Padres have won all six of his starts so far, although Vásquez allowed five runs in five innings in a win in his last start against the Cubs. Vaquez has a 34-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 33⅔ innings. This is Vásquez’s first career appearance against the Giants.

Giants RHP Trevor McDonald (2026 debut)   |   The 25-year-old has a 1.50 ERA in 18 innings since debuting in 2024. That includes two starts last September (13 IP, 1 ER). McDonald had a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings to start the year at Triple-A Sacramento. This is McDonald’s first appearance against the Padres.

Tuesday

RHP Walker Buehler (1-2, 5.40 ERA)   |   He has a 5.84 ERA in three starts since throwing six shutout innings on April 10. Buehler opened the season against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. Buehler has not allowed a home run since that first start against the Giants.

Wednesday

Padres RHP Matt Waldron (0-1, 9.88 ERA)   |   He’s gone five innings in each of his last two starts and has allowed a homer in all three starts. Waldron has a 1.65 ERA in 16 ⅓ career innings against the Giants. He last started against them in 2024, striking out five while allowing an unearned run in 5⅓ innings.

San Diego: RHP Germán Márquez hit the injured list Sunday with inflammation in a nerve in his right forearm. LHP Yuki Matsui (groin) and INF Will Wagner (oblique) are rehabbing with Triple-A El Paso. RHP Joe Musgrove (Tommy John) has not progressed past playing catch and RHP Nick Pivetta (flexor strain) has not resumed throwing.

San Francisco: OF Harrison Bader (hamstring), C Daniel Susac (elbow), LHP Sam Hentges (shoulder/knee) and RHP Joel Peguero (hamstring) should return this month. OF Jared Oliva (hamate) will be out at least another month, while RHP Jason Foley (shoulder) won’t return until midseason.
