Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman Had Their Teens at the Met Gala

One of the more openly discussed rules of the Met Gala is that it is not open to minors. Since at least 2018, guests have to be at least 18 years old to attend the event, which makes sense considering this is a party where people are always smoking cigarettes in the bathroom. However, rules are meant to be broken, especially if you’re the one throwing the party.

Co-chairs Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman both brought their daughters, Blue Ivy Carter (14) and Sunday Rose (17), respectively, to the event. It makes sense that an exception was made here. Not only are these two very fashionable teens — Sunday Rose is a model and, well, Blue Ivy is Blue Ivy — but their mothers would be in the same room all night. It’s not the same thing as letting, say, an underage star run wild and chaperone-free all evening. On the Vogue livestream, Kidman noted that Sunday Rose had to be in school at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Of course, this is not the first time minors have attended the Met Gala. Prior to the 2018 rule, it was more common to see teens and tweens on the carpet. In 2011, both Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning made their Met debuts at ages 14 and 13, respectively. Maybe next year it will finally be North West’s time.
