Many Colorado schools to close Wednesday due to snowy conditions

Some Colorado schools have opted to close on Wednesday due to a snowstorm moving through the state.

The storm system is bringing heavy, wet snow that will last through Wednesday, with the highest accumulation in the mountains and foothills.

Denver Public Schools and Aurora Public Schools, two of the largest districts in the state, have announced that classes will be canceled due to the inclement weather. DPS says all school-related events and activities are canceled on Wednesday, except for CHSSA-sanctioned competitions.

Initially, the Poudre School District announced cancellations at several mountain schools for Wednesday. The weather closures were extended to the entire district early Tuesday evening.

“Due to forecasted heavy wet snowfall and hazardous road conditions, all Poudre School District schools will be closed Wednesday, May 6. This will not be a remote learning day,” the district said.

Schools that have announced closures for Wednesday include:

  • Aurora Public Schools
  • Briggsdale School RE 10-J
  • Cedarwood Christian Academy
  • Cherry Hills Christian School
  • Clear Creek School District RE1
  • Denver Public Schools
  • Elbert School District #200
  • Estes Park Schools
  • Family Star Montessori
  • Front Range Baptist Academy
  • Gilpin County School District RE-1
  • Joshua School for Autism – Denver
  • Lotus School for Excellence
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School
  • Pickens Technical College
  • Poudre School District
  • Ricks Center for Gifted Children
  • Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning
  • St. John Paul the Great Catholic High School
  • Thompson School District R2-J
  • University of Colorado Boulder
  • Weld County School District RE-4

Other schools will start on a delayed schedule on Wednesday, including:

  • Limon School District – two hour delay

The Oval at Colorado State University will be closing early on Tuesday due to the weather.

“The Oval will be closed starting at 6 p.m. today due to wet, heavy snow on tree branches. Barricades will be placed to ensure safety. The Oval will remain closed tomorrow for further assessment. The University will continue to monitor the weather situation and provide updates on operations if necessary,” the university said.
