Michael Owen has urged Liverpool to replace Mohamed Salah with West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen and admitted: “I think he is brilliant.”

The Reds are in the market for a new right winger with Salah set to leave the club at the end of the season. The Egyptian, 33, who has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances since his move from Roma in 2017, confirmed back in March he would exit Anfield after nine years in the summer.

And Bowen has emerged as a candidate to replace Salah at Liverpool. The England international, 29, has eight goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League matches for West Ham this season.

Bowen has been a consistent performer for the Hammers since he joined from Hull City in 2020, and ex-Reds forward Owen believes that he is the most like-for-like replacement out there for Salah.

When asked if he would like to see Bowen at Liverpool, Owen told talkSPORT: “How do you know? I have said that to a couple of my mates the other day. I said, if I had one player. Now, obviously, Jarrod Bowen’s a legend of a player, West Ham, you know, adore the man, and rightly so.

“But, if West Ham went down, he would fit for me. I think he’s absolutely brilliant. I was lucky enough to do like a striking master class for a TV show we did last season with him, and I couldn’t believe it. Honestly, left foot, right foot, bang, bang, corners, pace. I mean, a real top finisher.

“I think he’s a brilliant player. I would be taking him to the World Cup, and, as I say, you know, I don’t want to upset West Ham fans, but if they went down, then he would be my idea of somebody to replace Salah.”

Bowen could be available on a cut-price deal if West Ham are relegated from the Premier League. The Hammers are the bookies’ favourite to go down to the Championship after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side dropped into the bottom three following a 3-0 defeat at Brentford and Tottenham’s 2-1 win against Aston Villa.

The ex-Hereford man has 84 goals in 277 appearances for the Hammers during his time at the London Stadium and there is expected to be significant interest in his services this summer.

Although Bowen is due to turn 30 in December, he still has four years left on his West Ham contract and could be available for around £30million this summer. That would be a cost-effective deal for the Reds and act as a smart piece of business as they look to return to challenge for the title next season.
