Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer says forearm isn’t responding as hoped

The Toronto Blue Jays could have to wait longer for the return of their three-time Cy Young Award winner.

Max Scherzer said his injured forearm isn’t responding as hoped after throwing at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported.

Scherzer was placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation on April 27.

He said the ankle recovery is progressing well.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays also said Addison Barger would play one last game at right field and third base in triple-A Wednesday before being activated ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Also, the team is working through next steps with starter Jose Berrios, who is set for another MRI,

Scherzer, 41, struggled in his last outing against the Cleveland Guardians, allowing seven runs on six hits and three homers in just 2.1 innings.

The veteran righty has just one strikeout over his last two starts, spanning 8.1 innings.

On the season, he holds a 9.64 ERA with 10 strikeouts and eight walks in 18.2 innings. He left an April 6 start against the Los Angeles Dodgers after just two frames with the same forearm tendinitis.

The Blue Jays are battling multiple pitching injuries with Shane Bieber, Berrios and reliever Yimi Garcia also on the shelf.
