Threats disrupt classes at several Kansas schools

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Classes were disrupted at several Kansas schools on Thursday after reports of threats.
Cheyenne County Emergency Management said around 10:30 a.m., Cheylin High School in Bird City received a phone call stating a gunman was on their way to the school.
School officials notified local law enforcement and activated the school crisis emergency plans.

“The school was immediately locked down and secured in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies out of an abundance of caution as all threats are taken seriously,” emergency management said in a release.
“All Cheylin students and staff were accounted for and immediately moved to safety. School officials ultimately decided to dismiss school early, and all students were reunified with parents,” the release continued.
Local law enforcement determined there was no active threat and the incident remains under investigation.
The school will have counseling services available to students in the coming days.
Western Plains High School evacuation
Western Plains High School in Ransom was evacuated after a threat there. The sheriff’s office said Ness County EMS, Trego County Sheriff’s Office, Wakeeney Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol responded and helped make the evacuation safe and efficient.
“Also thank you to the members of the public who assisted us, or offered to assist us! Our community is truly lucky to have people selflessly step up in a crisis,” the sheriff’s office said in a post on social media.
El Dorado High School incident
El Dorado police were also called on Thursday to investigate a potential threat at the high school around 11:35 a.m. The district said it did not include the inside of the school.
Out of caution, the district locked all doors at El Dorado High School and notified parents and caregivers. The situation was resolved about 15 minutes later and classes continued as scheduled.
