Dry start but a showery finish across Boston as warm air lingers one more day

Wednesday is the last day of warmth this week before our weather pattern flips. A southerly flow continues to bring milder air into New England, setting up commuting temperatures in the upper 50s and 60s with afternoon highs a little cooler, in the 60s, amid cloudy skies. A few spots could crack 70 degrees by late morning or early afternoon. Of course, the coast will remain a few degrees cooler, with the Cape likely lingering in the low 60s.

Extending out north of Massachusetts, highs will range widely. An approaching front brings showers early in the morning over Vermont, holding highs in the 50s. New Hampshire and interior Maine should warm up to the 60s with a few low 70-degree readings, while Coastal Maine stays closer to 60.

Morning showers, thunderstorms hit Western Mass., then Boston in the evening
A front will slowly move through New England during the day, with showers and general thunderstorms spreading throughout Vermont and Western Mass. in the morning, and eventually reaching Greater Boston and the coast during the evening hours.
So even though it’ll be dry out when you head to work in Eastern Mass. and Rhode Island, pack the umbrella in case you get caught in a shower on the way home.

Boston will hardly pick up much rain. Western Mass. and Northern New England may see a half inch, with isolated totals up north held closer to an inch.

With the atmosphere squeezed from the approaching cold front, we’ll still feel a breeze with southerly winds reaching 15 to 25 mph at times. You’ll also feel a bit of heaviness in the air with dew points in the mid-50s regionwide.

Thursday: Sunshine returns with cooler temperatures
The front and the rain will clear the region by Thursday, setting up a mostly dry day with cooler temperatures. A secondary low may form just south of New England by early Thursday morning, setting up a few showers along the southern edge of the region.

Greater Boston: Mostly cloudy with highs near 70, slightly cooler along the North and South Shores. Scattered showers during the afternoon and evening, while staying a bit breezy.
Central/Western Mass.: Mostly cloudy to overcast. Showers and general thunderstorms roll in during the morning and linger through much of the day. Highs to the low 60s in the Berkshires, near 70 east. A little breezy.
Southeastern Mass.: Mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Highs to the mid- and upper 60s. Scattered showers work in on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Breezy.

Cape Cod and Islands: Mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Highs to the low 60s. Scattered showers work into the region during the afternoon and last into the night. Staying breezy.
Rhode Island: Mostly cloudy skies to overcast. Highs to the mid- and upper 60s. Scattered showers during the afternoon and evening. Breezy.
New Hampshire: Mostly cloudy with highs to the upper 50s north, mid to upper 60s south. Scattered showers, steady rain, and general thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
Vermont/Maine: Vermont sees rain during the morning. Maine sees showers push in during the afternoon and evening. Highs to the low 50s in Vermont, low 60s in Maine.
Connecticut: Mostly cloudy with rain pushing into the state beginning in the morning. Highs reach the mid-60s to low 70s.
