John Aldridge says Liverpool can’t sell one man this summer as it would repeat Luis Diaz ‘mistake’

Liverpool legend John Aldridge says his old side can’t afford to let one man go this summer, as it could be “just as bad” as allowing Luis Diaz to join Bayern Munich a year ago

John Aldridge believes Liverpool should resist any transfer interest in Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker this summer, even though he has proven to be injury-prone across the course of this campaign.
The Italian giant Juventus is thought to hold strong interest in signing Alisson, who is under contract at Anfield until the end of next season. But Aldridge says letting him leave simply cannot be on the agenda.
Freddie Woodman has been standing in for Alisson in recent matches, but that is only because of an injury to Giorgi Mamardashvili at the same time. The Georgian is the number two and could be expected to step up if Alisson departs.

“One thing that Liverpool cannot allow to happen is Alisson leaving this summer,” Aldridge told Betting Lounge.
“Liverpool cannot allow that. It’s come out about his future and him potentially leaving, but it would be such a bad move for the club — as bad as letting Luis Diaz go last year.
“I know you’ve got to bring money in to get players you want, but not a chance. He’s still got years.

“Goalies are alright until their late 30s. I know he’s struggling a bit now with his kicking and his leg muscles, but you know, as long as he’s got two hands, he’ll be alright.”
Arne Slot was asked about Alisson’s future last month, ahead of his side taking on Crystal Palace at Anfield in the Premier League.
“I am only focused on the short-term future, and that is getting him back into goal as soon as possible,” Slot said.
“The answer is going to be that all these rumors that are out there about him and about probably me and about others, we don’t react to rumors in this room, also not in my conversations with [sporting director] Richard [Hughes].

“We only react when facts need to be told and that is not the situation at the moment.
“The main focus for Ali is very clear, that is getting back in goal as soon as possible for the club he loves to play for and then he wants to be in goal for the country he wants to play for, that is Brazil. I think that is already the short and mid-term future.”
Liverpool.com says: Alisson would be a big miss, for sure. With his injuries, though, there is a case for letting Mamardashvili take over, even if it would be a big call to make.
To address the Diaz point, which has been made so many times, Liverpool got really good money for the Colombian and he wanted to leave, with only two years left on his contract. The mistake there was not replacing him properly with adequate speed and dynamism out wide, rather than letting him go to Bayern Munich.
