Boy dies after being struck by school bus in N.J., police say

UPDATE: Family of N.J. boy killed by school bus: ‘Our hearts are shattered beyond words’

A boy died Friday afternoon after he was hit by a school bus in Gloucester County.

The incident happened in the area of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive in Greenwich Township around 3:40 p.m., Greenwich Township Police Chief Louis P. Damminger Jr. said in a statement.

When police arrived, the child was receiving care from residents in the area before EMS took over and rushed the boy to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where he later died from his injuries, Damminger Jr. said.

No other information about the crash were released Friday night as the incident was still under investigation by the department.

The Gloucester Township School District will have counselors available for students on Monday and residents affected by the incident were invited to speak with a representative at Clonmell Methodist Church on Saturday at 9 a.m.

“We are saddened to hear of a tragedy in town that happened today and want to provide a space for our community,” the church wrote on its Facebook page. “We pray for the family, our school faculty and staff, first responders, and anyone affected by this. We love our community and are are present with you during this difficult time.”
