Frank Lampard and Ross Barkley embrace during their Chelsea days

Coventry City will face competition for the signature of reported transfer target Ross Barkley.

It was recently claimed that Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard wants to be reunited with Barkley following the club’s promotion to the Premier League. Lampard managed Barkley during his first stint as Chelsea boss.

Barkley has one year remaining on his contract at Aston Villa and has become a regular pick for Unai Emery in recent weeks.

The 32-year-old has started six of Villa’s last seven Premier League games after only starting his first league game of the season in March.

Barkley could pursue more regular football elsewhere this summer and Coventry are well placed in the race given Lampard’s previous connection to the midfielder.

However, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon – via his Patreon account – Fulham are also admirers of Barkley.

It is no surprise that a player with more than 300 Premier League appearances is attracting plenty of interest and Barkley is exactly the sort of player Coventry need to give themselves a chance of avoiding relegation.

Seven of the nine teams most recently promoted from the Championship to the Premier League have been relegated the following season.

The performances of Sunderland and Leeds United in this season’s Premier League gives the Sky Blues and the other promoted sides hope if they can get their recruitment right.
