The M1 was shut northbound after a multi-vehicle collision.
The road was closed between junction one at Brent Cross and junction five for Watford.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service were at the scene, reported National Highways.
The road has reopened but drivers have been warned of delays.
