Revised plans for new apartments in Limerick city centre get the go ahead

REVISED plans to transform a popular former pub and nightclub into a new residential development to bring much-needed housing to the heart of Limerick city centre have been given the go ahead.
Thanos Securities applied to Limerick City and County Council proposing the new development of 76 apartments at 34-41 Catherine Street, the site of well-known former city nightlife hotspots the Desmond Arms and Cheers nightclub.
Under the plans, 34 Catherine Street will be demolished and replaced by two one-bedroom apartments, with plans set to include the refurbishment and alterations of 35 and 37 Catherine Street, which are both protected structures, as well as refurbishment and alternations to 36 Catherine Street.
Numbers 38-41 are also set for demolition, according to the plans for the former nightclub site, and will be converted into a six-storey residential development comprising 38 two-bedroom apartments and 30 one-bedroom apartments.

The site was previously home to Cheers nightclub and the Desmond Arms pub, which has been closed for over 20 years.
Apartments within the new development are being proposed either for owner occupation or for long-term rental.
The construction of a new-semi basement level at the former nightclub site with 11 car-parking spaces will be provided, as well as a secure bicycle store, ESB room, attenuation tank, and plant rooms.
On the fifth floor, the plans reveal, a communal roof terrace will also be installed as well as a screened plant area on the sixth floor.
Planning was approved by Limerick City and County Council subject to 15 conditions.
