A new camera angle has just shown that Phillip Danault’s goal against the Sabres should have counted for the Canadiens.
The referees disallowed a goal that would have made it 3-1 in the second period of Game 3 at the Bell Centre.
The decision drove all the analysts crazy.
And now even the journalists covering Buffalo are getting involved.
The images speak for themselves.
“Buffalo just got bailed out by the refs there after Phil Danault put that in off a Josh Anderson rebound.”

Buffalo reporters and NHL analysts agree Phillip Danault’s goal should have counted
It’s rare to see a journalist covering a team criticize a decision that benefits their own club.
But Rachel Lenzi couldn’t hold back.
“Officials wave off an apparent goal by Phillip Danault, on the ruling that Alex Lyon was pushed into the net on the play … but after watching the replay like the Zapruder film… It looked like the puck went in before Lyon was pushed. But I am also not a ref.”
When even the Buffalo reporter is saying it, there’s clearly a real problem.
Sportsnet’s Eric Engels also added his opinion:
“They’re saying Lyon was pushed into the net by Danault.
Was he? Don’t think so.”
Jeremy Filosa may have delivered the most complete analysis of the sequence.
“I think the Canadiens just got robbed of a goal.
The puck appears to cross the line before contact with the goalie, and Danault clearly seems to be pushed into the goalie by a Sabres player.”

It’s an almost unanimous consensus, and it’s a major officiating mistake here.
This is exactly the kind of decision that has put NHL officiating under the microscope since the start of the playoffs.
Luckily, the Habs responded very well to this injustice by scoring a few more goals.
