Egg-Size Hailstones Hit Tryavna

Hailstones the size of eggs have struck the north-central towns of Tryavna and Tsareva Livada, Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev told BTA. “An unprecedented hailstorm, unseen in more than 50 years, hit Tryavna this afternoon. The hail is still falling at the moment. So far, there are no reports of injured or stranded people. However, there is significant material damage,” Minev said.

In a Facebook post, he wrote that numerous reports had been received about shattered car windows, damage to roofs, yards, house windows, and property.

Teams are currently inspecting the town, and the local authorities are ready to provide assistance to residents if needed. The local volunteer emergency unit is also on standby, the mayor explained.

According to Minev, the disaster in Tsareva Livada is equally unprecedented due to the unusually large hailstones. Several vehicles became stranded and had to be pulled out. Leaves from forest trees were stripped off and now cover the ground.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology had earlier warned of expected hailstorms on Tuesday. A yellow warning code for intense rainfall has been issued for parts of the country.
