Meg Stalter’s Dream of Doing Oh, Mary Is Coming True

“If they let me play Mary,” Meg Stalter told Vulture in her Culturati 50 interview, “I’ll buy everyone in Ohio a car.” So congrats to everyone in the beautiful state of Ohio: You are all getting cars today, because Meg Stalter is officially making her Broadway debut as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! this summer. This is huge news for anyone who saw Stalter scream “Get me OUTTA here!” last summer on Colbert and thought, “Wait … she needs to be doing this kind of screaming on the big beautiful Broadway stage at the Lyceum Theatre immediately.” Stalter will take over the role from Maya Rudolph on July 6 for a limited, ten-week engagement.
One big question remains: What will happen to Stalter’s burgeoning pop career? Well, as she told Seth Meyers, she was going to keep making music until a role happened, and a role is happening, so maybe that’s that for the “Prettiest Girl in America” for now. Besides: What was Mary Todd Lincoln if not the prettiest girl in America during the time in which she lived? Bet you didn’t think that. It’s a shame that Stalter won’t be able to play Mary Todd with her platinum-blonde wig, but the bratty curls will suit her just fine.
