For the Daily Record’s latest Chippy of the Week, we have chosen a renowned fish and chip shop that was once singled out as one of the “world’s top food experiences” by travel guide Lonely Planet. Not only that, but it has earned rave reviews from everyday customers as well.
The Bay Fish and Chips is an award-winning eatery situated along the seafront in the beautiful Aberdeenshire town of Stonehaven. According to the fish and chip shop’s website, it appeared at number 31 on the Lonely Planet’s guide to the best food experiences in the world in 2018—and was the highest-ranking spot in Britain.
At the time, the Lonely Planet wrote: “Considering the setting, the sustainability and the beautifully cooked fish, is [the Bay] the best fish and chip shop in the world? The constant queue suggests so.”
The Bay Fish and Chips serves up hand-filleted and MSC-certified North Sea haddock that is supplied by the family-run Coupers Seafoods in Aberdeen. Customers can choose from either batter or panko breadcrumbs, while the chips are made with premium potatoes such as Maris Piper and Markies and grown from locally grown seeds.
The takeaway also offers daily specials that feature fresh and in-season fish that comes straight from a local market. Other options include battered salmon, battered or breaded scampi, smoked haddock fishcakes, and a seafood platter that includes all of the fish dishes available.

“Our fish and chips were great and drinks and condiments were very up market for a chip shop. A lovely area to visit on a sunny day, I would highly recommend.”
Another shared: “This was my favourite food that I ate while on my trip through Scotland and the best fish and chips I’ve had anywhere so far. The batter was crispy and the fish was nice and flaky.
“The portions were huge and the price was great too. There can be a line but it moves quickly and the people there are friendly so it’s not an issue.”
