Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein’s chemistry in Office Romance was there from the start.
The singer and actress, 56, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her forthcoming romantic comedy and working with the Ted Lasso star, 45, at the Netflix Upfront in New York City on Wednesday, May 13.
“We had great chemistry to begin with,” Lopez tells PEOPLE. “It just grew as we did the film together.”

Lopez went on to explain that Goldstein was not like what she anticipated, saying, “I expected more of a rough guy, but you get this kind, gentle but also very smart person that is so charming. That was a surprise, I think.”
“I was a huge fan of his from him doing Ted Lasso. Roy Kent, that’s one of my favorite characters,” the Marry Me actress says. “I thought he was going to be more like the character, but he was so soft-spoken and sweet and totally different.”

Ahead of the release of the rom-com’s trailer, director Ol Parker told PEOPLE Lopez and Goldstein had immediate chemistry that was evident even before production. “I had lunch with them way before we began, and we just laughed all the way through the lunch, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is gonna go great,” he shared.
And Goldstein, who co-wrote the film with Joe Kelly, revealed they wrote the script and the role of Jackie with Lopez in mind.
“We started asking ourselves who the best rom-com star is, and without hesitation, we both said JLo,” Goldstein told PEOPLE. “It’s easy to write a rom-com when you have JLo in mind. She’s the best at this stuff. We just wanted to write something funny and smart enough to be worthy of her saying yes.”
In Office Romance, Lopez plays Jackie Cruz, a CEO at a major company who falls for her recently hired employee, Daniel Blanchflower, played by Goldstein. Their secret love affair is in full swing when Jackie and Daniel decide to “stop playing by the rules and start following their hearts,” according to the official logline.
Alongside Lopez and Goldstein, Office Romance stars Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, Edward James Olmos and Bradley Whitford.
Office Romance will be available to stream on Netflix starting June 5.
