Section of M2 shut after crash between lorry and pedestrian

A section of the M2 has closed following a serious crash between a pedestrian and a lorry.

The incident happened on the M2 coast-bound carriageway between Junction 3 (Blue Bell Hill) and Junction 4 (Gillingham) at around 2pm today (May 14).

Police, paramedics and members of the Air Ambulance are currently in attendance.

National Highways said the collision is “serious”.

A statement on its website said: “Kent Police are leading the response and will be carrying out a full investigation, meaning the road will remain closed throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

“National Highways traffic officers are assisting with road closures.”

Around 3.30pm there were delays of 37 minutes and two miles of congestion on the approach.

The diversion route is:

Exit at the M2 junction 3 and take the 3rd exit to the A229 and travel 300m to Lord Lee’s Roundabout and take the 1st exit to take the A229 south towards Maidstone.

Head south for approximately 2.5 miles and join the M20 eastbound at J6.

Head eastbound for just over a mile and exit at M20 J7 where you can take the first exit to take the A249 North.

Head north for approximately 5.5 miles where you can rejoin the M2 at J5.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it was also called to assist the police.

The ambulance service has been contacted for more information.
