All Killeen ISD schools placed on secure status after threat of violence

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – All Killeen Independent School District campuses have been placed in a secure status “out of an abundance of caution” on Friday afternoon.

The school district said local law enforcement advised an unknown individual made a threat involving a weapon and a homemade explosive device in the vicinity of Bunny Trail.

Killeen ISD said law enforcement is actively investigating. “At this time, there is no confirmed threat to any campus,” the Killeen Police Department said.

According to the latest update from KISD, Killeen police are utilizing air surveillance to assess the situation.

During a secure status, all exterior doors are secured and no one is permitted to enter or exit the building, the district said. Students and staff continue their day as normal inside the school.

As part of the precautions, campuses have also paused outdoor activities — including Field Day, outdoor PE and athletics — until further notice.

Killeen ISD said it will continue working closely with law enforcement and will provide additional updates as needed.

“Once law enforcement determines there is no active threat, the district will communicate with campuses about lifting the secure,” the school district said.
