Non-stop scripture reading to mark major milestone in Glasgow this weekend

A non-stop prayer session will mark a milestone anniversary at a place of worship this weekend.
Glasgow’s Central Gurdwara will hold a non-stop holy scripture reading from Friday morning till Sunday evening to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Sikh temple.
Surjit Chowdhary MBE, chair of the gurdwara’s management committee, said: “Our 10th anniversary falls on May 16, but our celebrations begin on May 15.
“During the weekend we would be delighted to welcome visitors to share our happiness on this important and joyous occasion.”

The gurdwara is marking a decade of service to the community, including its vital role during the Covid-19 pandemic, when it provided more than half a million meals.
These meals were delivered to hospitals, police stations, fire brigade, hotels and homes throughout the city, with other regular deliveries made to places as far apart as Glasgow Airport and Greenock.
The gurdwara also supported international students during the pandemic, offering food and a temporary place to sleep in the temple.
Between 80-100 arrived every day to spend the night on the gurdwara’s carpets, with the community buying 100 new quilts and pillows for their use.

Since then, the gurdwara has expanded its activities to include medical camps three times a year, enabling anyone to receive a health check from a team of doctors.
It also operates a day centre that welcomes people of all backgrounds for support, conversation or guidance.
The kitchen continues to serve free meals daily to everyone who walks through its doors.
