Kristen Stewart bent the rules at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. Known for challenging the prestigious event’s strict dress code, it’s no surprise that Stewart tiptoed around the rules on Saturday. While attending the Full Phil photo call, the Chanel ambassador posed in a sheer, tweed skirt suit from the designer’s spring 2026 haute couture collection.
The festival rules, put in place to preserve the refinement of the event, adamantly prohibit guests from wearing naked dresses or sheer pieces. Stewart, however, managed to circumvent the dress code by pairing her see-through ensemble with a delicate underlay, creating the illusion of a sheer ensemble.
Stewart’s full outfit featured a sheer, collared top with a tweed-inspired mesh design and a plunging neckline layered over a delicate pink halter top with purple lace detailing along the hem. She paired the top with matching pink shorts layered under a dark gray midi skirt. Both the top and bottom of the skirt suit also featured square pockets with fringe detailing and pearlescent button embellishments.

She styled the look with a Chanel Lune ring in silver, which featured a a diamond-encrusted star design, and vintage Nike saddle shoes in black and white.
During the photo call, Stewart also posed for photos with Emma Mackey, who wore a minimalist Louis Vuitton sleeveless jersey dress and black leather pumps, and Charlotte Le Bon, who wore ayered tulle skirt came paired with a dramatic ruffled top from Dior’s fall 2026 collection.
This isn’t the first time Stewart has overlooked the dress code. In 2016, when the festival still required women attendees to wear heels, Stewart made a statement in a white Chanel mini dress and low-top Converse sneakers in blue. “People get very upset if you don’t wear heels or whatever… I feel like you can’t ask people that any more—it’s a given,” Kristen Stewart, who wore Converse sneakers to Cannes in 2016, once said. “If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.” As of 2026, guests are required to wear “elegant shoes, with or without heels.”

Given Stewart’s strong stance on the festival’s footwear requirements in previous years, her decision to arrive in saddle shoes this year feels all the more meaningful.
Stewart isn’t alone in her decision to push the boundaries of the Cannes Film Festival’s dress code. On May 15, Andie McDowell fully broke the festival’s style rules when she arrived in a sheer LBD with plunging chest cutouts and cinched detailing beneath the bust. The same day, Riley Keough defied the rules in a completely sheer Chanel outfit in blush pink.
As the festival continues, it seems like Stewart won’t be the only celebrity challenging the dress code.
