The Oakland police said in a brief statement today the suspect vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on 85th Avenue. It turned west onto International Boulevard and hit a parked car before crashing into the pedestrians.
OPD’s decision to encrypt its radio traffic prevented The Oaklandside from learning more about how emergency personnel responded.
The East Bay Times and San Francisco Chronicle reported that the suspected driver is under the age of 18.
KTVU reported that a crash involving a black SUV and a blue vehicle preceded the deadly collision. After the vehicles hit each other, the SUV reportedly jumped the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and rammed a group of pedestrians.
Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement thanking police and fire for responding to the crash. “Oakland is mourning the lives lost in last night’s tragic crash at International Boulevard and 85th Avenue in East Oakland,” said Lee. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted.”
