Mary G. Montgomery High School fined, placed on probation after violation of AHSAA recruiting rule

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mary G. Montgomery High School has been fined and placed probation for violating a recruiting rule, according to the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
The school self-reported the violation, the AHSAA acknowledged.
Any students in violation of this rule will be deemed permanently ineligible to participate in athletics at Mary G. Montgomery High School, the association stated on it website. The students can gain eligibility in the school district where the family resides, the AHSAA said.
In addition, the MGM head football coach, Zach Golson, will be suspended from coaching in the AHSAA for the 2026-2027 school year, and the school’s varsity football program is being placed on restrictive probation for the upcoming 2026 season. The AHSAA said the team will be allowed to play its 10-game regular-season schedule but will be unable to participate in post-season play in 2026.
Earlier this month. Golson was placed on leave for what was only described as a personnel matter, according to Mobile County Public School System.
