Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales star Dave Ellwood has told how he ended up in intensive care after a “frightening” incident with a bull. Farmer Dave, whose daughter Jess is dating the programme’s star Reuben, opened up in the latest instalment of the Channel 5 show.

He was travelling to get a bull to surprise Jess when she and Reuben were enjoying a break in Cyprus. And he told how he had been rushed to hospital by air ambulance and left with several injuries after an accident involving a bull several years ago.

The show’s narrator said: “Dave has good reason to be cautious with a new bull after a frightening accident 15 years ago.”

“Yeah, he rung me into some girders, didn’t he, and threw me about a bit,” he said. “And, uh, yeah, he made a mess of us, didn’t he?”

Asked how long he was in intensive care for, he replied: “A couple of days, weren’t I? I went in the air ambulance to Middlesbrough. They found out, what was it, nine broken ribs and a ruptured spleen.” “Yeah, he had made a good job,” he added of the bull.

The show follows Reuben as he builds up his machinery business. He found fame on Our Yorkshire Farm, starring alongside his parents, Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda and farmer Clive, and his eight brothers and sisters Raven, Edith, Miles, Clemmy, Annas, Sidney, Nancy and Violet, he then went on to land his Channel 5 spin-off.

Elsewhere in the episode, Reuben and his team members Sonny and Capper ran into trouble when Capper got stuck in a bog. The trio had been digging a pond and Capper got wedged in, realising that he couldn’t pull out his legs, which were encased in mud up to the knees.

“I can’t get out!” he exclaimed as Sonny started pulling him out. “How has that happened?” Capper went on. “I’m 6ft 6″, and now I’m two foot tall.”

Coming up with a plan, Sonny said: “All right, I’m going to chuck myself back, but you are going to hold on. Come on. Step, one step. Come on, come on.”

However, Capper struggled, explaining: “I’ll push myself further down, Sonny!” The narrator explained: “Capper’s sinking lower by the minute.”

Luckily, as Sonny continued to pull, Capper started to become freed from the mud, groaning as he eased himself up onto the bank.

Reuben looked amused as he watched Sonny drag Capper from the marshy ground, teasing: “I don’t understand how you two have survived to the ages you are!”
