Kane has enjoyed a superb season with Bayern Munich, scoring 58 goals across all competitions. He is one of the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or and his form has not gone unnoticed in Italy.Asked who is the best striker in the world, Martinez told Gazzetta dello Sport: ”Harry Kane.

“I even put him ahead of Haaland for the way he controls the ball, the way he links up and reads the game, and his headers. A phenomenon.”

Martinez is the leading scorer this season in Serie A with 17 goals, helping Inter win the title for the second time in the last three years.

Despite Inter’s success over the last few seasons, Jose Mourinho said recently that no player from the current team would start in his treble-winning side of 2009/10.

”Everyone has their own ideas,” said Martinez about Mourinho’s comment.

”It doesn’t make much sense to me to compare footballers from different eras. The important thing is to think about the good of Inter without listening too much to the chatter. You have to live in the present, which is a lot.”

Martinez has been with Inter since 2018 and is third in the club’s all-time scoring charts with 175 goals.

He admits that he came close to leaving last summer after Inter were knocked out of the Club World Cup by Fluminense.

Martinez called out his team-mates following the defeat, criticising the mentality of the squad and saying ”anyone who doesn’t want to stay can leave”.

Reflecting on that, he said: ”I’m not saying I asked to leave, but I had this feeling inside me that if a big offer had arrived, maybe.

”I was devastated. That’s what inspired the interview after the elimination against Fluminense. I went out, put on my shirt, and said what I thought.

“I wanted to share what I saw in the locker room. As captain, it was my duty. Then I went on vacation and didn’t train for three weeks, I just ate. In fact, when I returned, I weighed a little more…

”Speaking out in public made a stir. But I was also angry with myself, because I wasn’t blameless.

”Then [new head coach Cristian] Chivu gave us a hand, bringing a breath of fresh air. Without taking anything away from Simone [Inzaghi], who gave us four wonderful years.”
