Sudbury resident dies in structure fire on Little Gabodin Lake

Ontario Provincial Police investigating after May 17 fire at remote lake leaves one person dead and another with serious injuries
A Sudbury resident is dead following a structure fire on Little Gabodin Lake on May 17.
Little Gabodin Lake is a small waterbody located south of the city. It is accessible by portaging east from Lake Panache.
On May 17 at around 12:30 a.m., Nipissing West Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a structure fire on an island in Little Gabodin Lake.
“Due to the remote location, specialized resources were deployed to access the scene and assist with the extraction efforts, including the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Aviation Services, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC),” OPP said.
Police said the fire left a 26-year-old Sudbury resident dead at the scene, while a 27-year-old, also from Sudbury, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
“The investigation remains ongoing by the Nipissing West OPP Crime Unit, with assistance from the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal,” OPP said.
