Mavericks part ways with head coach Jason Kidd

Dallas and head coach Jason Kidd mutually parted ways on Tuesday, per a team announcement.
Kidd, 53, had served as the Mavericks’ head coach since the 2021-22 season.
Dallas is operating under new leadership after hiring former Toronto Raptors exec Masai Ujiri as team president and Mike Schmitz as general manager earlier this month, and the team will immediately begin its search for a new head coach.
“As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team,” Ujiri said in a statement issued by the team. “We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve.”
A Hall of Famer for his career on the court, Dallas was Kidd’s second stop as a head coach — previously spending one season at the helm with the Brooklyn Nets and four with the Milwaukee Bucks.
He landed with the Mavericks after longtime coach Rick Carlisle resigned in the summer of 2021.
Kidd then helped Dallas make the post-season twice over five seasons, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 2024, where the Mavericks ultimately lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.
Under Kidd, the Mavericks missed the playoffs in the last two seasons and finished 26-56 in 2025-26.
Kidd’s career record in Dallas was 410-205.
