Swindon club hits £1 million fundraising target in centenary year

A major fundraiser has brought Swindon Rotary’s total support for local charities and causes to more than £1 million.

Swindon Rotary Club marked its centenary year with the milestone figure at its annual charity ball, held at the Doubletree by Hilton Swindon.

The event, attended by nearly 200 guests, featured entertainment from the Tanwood School of Performing Arts and a lively performance by the Drum Waiters.

Since its launch in 1989, the charity ball has supported more than 100 charities and community organisations.

However, for its 100th year, the club chose a single beneficiary: Swindon’s Society Without Abuse (SWA).

Kate Rowland, CEO of SWA, said: “Fundraising events like this are so incredibly valuable to charities.

“This money raised by Swindon Rotary will make a massive difference to those who are experiencing and recovering from domestic abuse in Swindon.

“We are so grateful to Swindon Rotary for their ongoing support and commitment to making a real difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and families in Swindon.”

SWA works to end domestic abuse through education, intervention, and prevention, supporting women, men, and children across Swindon.

The charity also delivers workplace training to help businesses support employees affected by abuse.

Swindon Rotary has supported SWA for nearly 30 years, funding improvements at its former refuge and providing resources for survivors.

Richard Deacon, president of Swindon Rotary, said: “Since our inception in 1926, Swindon Rotary Club has raised many millions of pounds for charities locally, nationally and internationally, as well as supporting many projects that have made Swindon a better place to be over all those years.

“I’m sure those who founded our wonderful club would be very proud to know that we are still going strong after 100 years.”

The club has marked its centenary by publishing a book, Rotary Club of Swindon Centenary Book 1926-2026, which looks back at its history and community projects.

Anyone seeking advice about domestic abuse can call Swindon’s helpline on 01793 610610.

Mr Deacon said: “Swindon Rotary is about people and helping those who are less fortunate, over the past 100 years our impact has reached across the town and beyond.

“The group is open to new members who can take forward the legacy of the last 100 years and continue it for another 100.”
