Mellody Hobson Recalls Husband George Lucas’ Parenting Wisdom Before They Had a Child Together

Mellody Hobson says her husband, George Lucas, shared his own parenting wisdom with her when they had their daughter.
The businesswoman and Lucas share Everest, now 12. The “Star Wars” filmmaker had three children before he and Hobson wed in 2013.
“I have a child that holds me accountable,” Hobson told Craig Melvin on the May 19 episode of his “Glass Half Full” podcast.
“George told me this when we had Everest. He said, ‘Mellody, with a child, there is no highway,’” Hobson recalled.
“He said, ‘You live in a world where it’s my way or the highway. You can put anyone on the highway, including a spouse. You have people who work for you.’ He’s like, ‘It’s my way or the highway, but there’s no highway with a child.’ He’s like, ‘And that is going to be your learning,’” she added.
It’s just one example of her husband’s “great learnings,” Hobson said.
“I married Yoda’s dad, you know that. He’s very wise, he is,” she said. “There are a lot of great learnings that come from George. And at the same time — he knows that I say this — he’s your crazy uncle. He’s both. He’s a genius who’s a crazy uncle, too.”
Hobson and Lucas dated for seven years before they got married in 2013, a few months before they welcomed Everest via surrogate.
She called their daughter “formidable,” noting she is a guarded child.
“She’s an observer. She will take in a lot of information. She’s not chatty with others. She’s very, very reticent when she meets people. She doesn’t just let you in,” Hobson said.
“I’m friendly to everyone. And she’s reserved, very. … And, so, she’s discerning, and I really appreciate that about her,” she added.
Citing an example of how Everest holds her accountable, Hobson said, “When I’m talking to her, she’s like, ‘You’ve stopped paying attention to me.’”
“She’s 12, so she can see when my mind leaves the conversation,” Hobson added. “She will call me out on it.”
Hobson also said her daughter “hates the phone,” which Craig can relate to. He said his children, 12-year-old son Delano and 9-year-old daughter Sybil, are the same way.
Craig said if he’s having a conversation with his kids and he gets distracted by his phone, his kids react incredulously.
“I’m like, ‘Oh my god, you’re right,’” Craig said.
Asked by Craig if she has any moments she’d “redo” looking back on her life and career, Hobson said she wishes she had more children.
“I’m annoyed with myself. I should have had more,” Hobson said.
“You’re still young,” Craig chimed in.
“I’m 56,” Hobson responded, while starting to laugh. “My daughter told me the other day, she said I was older than death.”
