Prince William to join Aston Villa fans in Turkey for Europa League final | ITV News

The Prince of Wales will travel to Turkey to watch his team Aston Villa take on Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday (20 May).

It will be the first time the club have reached a major European final since May 1982, their 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam was just less than a month after William was born.

William told comedian Matt Lucas that he would be at the game in Istanbul after Lucas received an OBE for services to drama at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

Lucas, 52, said: “I asked him about football and whether he would be able to get to the cup final tomorrow that Aston Villa are playing in, and he said he can.

“He asked me what I was up to work wise and said some kind things about my work.”

William has been a fan of the team since he was a schoolboy and is also a patron of the Football Association.

The prince was photographed cheering from the stands during the team’s 4-0 win against Nottingham Forest on 7 May which secured them a 4-1 aggregate win.

He also later celebrated with players in the dressing room after their victory.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery confirmed William had joined in with post-match celebrations.

“He was in the dressing room with the players and with me, and of course, he is so happy as well,” the Spaniard said.
