Kylie Minogue privately went through cancer a second time. In her self-titled Netflix documentary, Kylie, released on Wednesday, the Australian singer revealed that, after surviving a cancer diagnosis in 2005, she was diagnosed again in early 2021. “I was able to keep that to myself, not like the first time,” Minogue said in the three-part series. “Thankfully, I got through it, again, and all is well.”
Minogue was first treated for breast cancer in 2005 following a routine checkup. As she underwent a lumpectomy on top of chemotherapy, she was forced to cancel the remainder of her tour and pull out of headlining Glastonbury Festival. In February 2006, she was declared cancer-free.
While Minogue shared what she was going through the first time around, she says she didn’t “feel obliged to tell the world” in 2021, “and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person.” In the middle of enjoying the success of her 2024 Grammy-winning single “Padam Padam,” she struggled to “find the right time” to share updates about her health, ultimately deciding to keep things private.
“I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point,” she said. “‘Padam Padam’ opened so many doors for me, but on the inside, I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life.”
Minogue added that she’s “so grateful to be able to say that I am well today” and also credited early detection. She hopes her story provides “a gentle reminder” for everyone to do their checkups.
