Davion Flanagan was a 19-year-old with a promising future until he was tragically killed in a car crash.

Davion was raised in Ohio with his two younger sisters, Davyne and Dalia, by his adoptive parents, Jaime and Scott Flanagan. He had a passion for football and had dreams of opening a barbershop one day.

However, Davion was suddenly killed on July 31, 2022, when he was sitting in the back of a car driven by then-17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla. Shirilla, who was dating his friend Dominic Russo, accelerated the car to 100 mph and crashed it into a brick building — killing both Davion and Dominic.

After an investigation was conducted, Mackenzie was arrested and later convicted of murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, felonious assault, drug possession and other crash-related offenses. She was sentenced to two concurrent 15-year-to-life terms in August 2023.

Both Davion and Dominic’s lives and their tragic deaths were told in the Netflix documentary, The Crash, which hit the streamer on May 15. Both Davion’s father, Scott, and sister Davyne participated in the emotional doc.

Davion was a talented athlete, aspiring barber and dedicated friend and family member. He was adopted and raised by Scott and Jaime starting at 8 years old. He had two younger sisters, Davyne and Dalia.

“He was friends with everyone at school,” Scott told PEOPLE in September 2023. “There wasn’t a clique that he belonged to. He just gave everyone as much love as he could, and really just let them be heard and let them feel like they were noticed.”

Scott gushed that Davion “always made time” for people he cared about and wanted to make everyone — even those he wasn’t friends with — “feel included and wanted and appreciated.”

In addition to his caring persona, Davion was also a promising athlete who played football at Strongsville High School and worked as a youth swim coach. After suffering injuries, Davion pursued haircutting and had plans to attend Allstate Hairstyling & Barber College in Cleveland.

What happened to Davion Flanagan?

In high school, Davion befriended Dominic Russo and his girlfriend, Mackenzie.

In the late evening of July 30, 2022, the three friends attended several parties before leaving the last event a little after 5 a.m. the following morning. Around 30 minutes later, Mackenzie slammed her 2018 Toyota Camry into a brick wall.

While Mackenzie was treated for several injuries, both Dominic — who was in the passenger seat — and Davion — who was in the back seat — were pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

Authorities and forensic auto investigators thoroughly investigated the crash and determined that Mackenzie pushed down on the accelerator 100% until the car reached approximately 100 mph before hitting the wall.

Police ultimately determined that Mackenzie intentionally crashed the car and killed both of the young adults. In November 2022, Mackenzie was arrested and charged with four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of drug possession and one count of possessing criminal tools.

Mackenzie stood trial for her charges in March 2023 and was found guilty. Later that month, she was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life in prison with credit for time served and a permanent suspension of her driver’s license.

Several of Davion’s family members addressed his death both before and after Mackenzie was sentenced. Davion’s mother, Jaime, got emotional while expressing how her son’s death affected the family.

“My son Davion is and always will be so much more than cargo,” she said through tears at the sentencing, per Court TV. “He was precious. He was an amazing soul with a heart of gold.”

Jaime explained that her daughters are “devastated” and “lost their best friend, their protector, the one and only trusted family that has been by their side from day one.”

“I also pray that Mackenzie will find true remorse in her heart and true repentance,” she continued.

One of Davion’s sisters, Davyne, also addressed the judge and admitted that she felt “stuck” and “lost” after her brother’s death.

“I would like you to give Mackenzie the longest possible sentence,” she said. “I’ve known her for about three years, and she’s always taken the easy way out.”

After hearing Mackenzie’s fate, Scott and Jaime shared their opinions on the concurrent sentence.

“I think that when it first came down to us and we heard the judge’s verdict, we were a little bit surprised,” Scott told PEOPLE in September 2023. “There were two people in that car. And to have the sentences going concurrently seemed to take away from the two individual lives. I mean, Dominic was his own fantastic, wonderful person, and so was our son. And so we were a little bit, I think it’s fair to say we were shocked a little bit and disappointed.”

He continued, “The best possible outcome that could come from this is Mackenzie having a change of heart in prison and becoming the best version of herself and leading a productive life when she does get out. That’s the best thing that could happen from our perspective.”

Jaime added, “But it’s out of our hands.”

Meanwhile, Davyne addressed Mackenzie’s in court apology in The Crash. “That the worst apology I think I’ve ever heard in my life,” she said. “I know when someone’s being fake or not and that was not real.”

Davion’s family members have continued to honor him and uphold his legacy. Since 2023, they have raised money as part of a barber scholarship in honor of their late son.

“In the midst of this devastating tragedy, our family would like to attempt to create something good & hopeful,” the GoFundMe reads. “We would like our son, Davion, to be remembered & to be honored in a way that somehow contributes to joy & goodness in this world. We hope to memorialize Davion’s life in a way that gives back & that will carry on the love & kindness that he himself carried in his own beautiful heart. The love that he wanted so badly for himself & that he gave to the world around him.”

The page explained that they will use any proceeds — which exceeded $74,000 as of May 2026 — to “create a memorial scholarship fund to help future low income barbers attend & achieve their dream.”

Both Jaime and Scott told PEOPLE that the scholarship has given them “some joy and hope in the middle of all of this sadness and devastation.”

When Mackenzie’s appeal was denied in March 2026, his family expressed their gratitude for the court’s decision to uphold the ruling.

“We cannot express how much we appreciate the prosecutors who faithfully took up this case and all of the subsequent appeals and fought for justice for Davion and Dominic,” the family wrote in the GoFundMe. “We feel absolutely blessed to have been assigned such an intelligent, diligent and caring team to see this process through.”

Scott appeared in The Crash where he condemned Mackenzie for treating Davion “with the utmost disregard.” Despite her conviction, Mackenzie and her parents have claimed that she did not intentionally crash the car.

“I have the capacity for forgiveness,” Scott said. “I just want to know the truth of what happened that night, and I would be eternally grateful for her to actually tell us how those last few moments were — no matter how damaging to her they might be — to say just to say the truth and let us know and let us grieve properly and have some closure.”

As for his feelings about Mackenzie, Scott said that his “biggest hope” is that “she does change” and isn’t “babied” by her parents while in prison.
