Newcastle could see a u-turn over one of their star players who was expected to be sold this summer after an intriguing new update.

The Magpies are expecting a difficult summer where they will face a battle to keep hold of the likes of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon after missing out on a place in Europe for next season.

Eddie Howe’s side are hoping to avoid a repeat of last summer” href=”https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/uk-premier-league/2026/03/newcastle-worried-about-alexander-isak-saga-repeat-for-eur116m-star-as-dream-transfer-emerges-sandro-tonali” target=”_blank”>hoping to avoid a repeat of last summer which saw Alexander Isak go on strike in a saga that dragged on from June until the final day of the transfer window.

Consequently, the club have told wantaway players to resolve their futures before the start of the World Cup, which has led to Bayern Munich entering talks to sign Gordon” href=”https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/uk-premier-league/2026/05/anthony-gordon-arsenal-suffer-fresh-bayern-munich-blow-in-winger-pursuit” target=”_blank”>Bayern Munich entering talks to sign Gordon, while Tonali has also attracted interest, although it remains to be seen whether any team meets Newcastle’s asking price of more than €80 million.

However, a forgotten name in the transfer plans has been Tino Livramento, who was arguably the most likely player to be sold, with his contract set to expire in 2028 and following interest from teams such as Arsenal and Manchester City.

But well-sourced Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder” href=”https://x.com/lee_ryder/status/2057025565400461583″ target=”_blank”>Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder has confirmed that Livramento is now in talks over signing a new deal despite initial reservations over an extension, suggesting that the tides may have turned over a summer move for the defender.

Livramento falling out of form and fashion after injury problems

Livramento has been a consistent performer for Newcastle since his €37 million move from Southampton in 2023 and he has established himself as one of the best young full-backs in the Premier League.

Capable of playing on either flank, Livramento was also expected to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup after receiving five caps since his England debut two years ago.

But Livramento’s World Cup dreams are dangling by a thread after the 23-year-old went off injured against Bournemouth last month, which has seen the full-back be ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

The injury came just one month after Livramento had returned from another eight-week layoff, having also struggled to recapture his best form during that period and totalling just 17 league appearances this season.

The combination of poor performances and an alarming number of injuries will not have convinced the likes of City and Arsenal to splash the cash on Livramento, with Newcastle likely to demand in excess of €50m for their first-choice right-back.

FootballTransfers has been told that Arsenal have held positive talks with Livramento’s representatives” href=”https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/uk-premier-league/2026/05/exclusive-arsenal-transfer-news-tino-livramento-newcastle-steve-kay” target=”_blank”>FootballTransfers has been told that Arsenal have held positive talks with Livramento’s representatives but it remains to be seen whether the Gunners are willing to risk making the youngster one of the most expensive defenders of all time with his injury record.

With Livramento having previously held off contract talks to explore a move away, the claim that he is now back in talks over a new deal suggests that the player may have resigned himself to staying at Newcastle.

Newcastle will be in the market for a new full-back this summer to replace the departing Kieran Trippier, while young midfielder Lewis Miley has impressed at right-back in Livramento’s absence.

Although Newcastle will be happy to tie Livramento down to a new deal, the focus could now be on the England star signing a new deal and proving his fitness to ensure he can find a big move and avoid being left out in the cold for club and country.
