Practice Report (5/21): View from the sideline

The Giants hosted their third OTA in as many days at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Due to the weather, practice was moved inside.

* A day after the Giants offense consistently made plays in the passing game, the Giants defense stepped up on Thursday, making a number of plays on a day focused on third down. Kayvon Thibodeaux was in the backfield on a couple of different plays, including one would be sack and another pressure that came on a play where Brandon Allen hit Dalen Cambre on a deep crossing route.

* Allen got a big opportunity to show what he could do Thursday and he impressed. He completed a number of passes down the field, including a deep post to Xavier Gipson on a play where Nic Jones was bearing down on him on a corner blitz. During 7-on-7’s, Allen had the pass of the day, placing the ball perfectly to Isaiah Hodgins between two defenders.

* On the next play, Beau Brade got revenge for the defense as he jumped in front of a pass deep down the middle of the field for the interception. He had another pass breakup later in practice.

* Deonte Banks had great coverage down the right sideline early in practice, and again later during high red zone drills to prevent a touchdown. He also got near the quarterback on a corner blitz.

* Zacch Pickens and Leki Fotu each had pressures. Chauncey Golston might have gotten a sack on a quick pass rush around the edge. Tremaine Edmunds got into the backfield for a likely sack.

* During the situation part of practice, Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome both came up with pass breakups. Jason Pinnock also got his hands on the ball as he nearly came away with an interception.

* Arvell Reese was very active in practice. He played great coverage running with Devin Singletary on a wheel route down the sideline. He also quickly got out into the flat on a completion to Tyrone Tracy. On two short passes later in practice to Singletary and Tracy, Reese was in hot pursuit, though Tracy might have outrun the defense for a touchdown.

* Tight end Tanner Conner had a strong first week of practice catching the football, as he had a few receptions over the middle. He has been a consistent target for the quarterbacks so far during OTA’s.

* The three placekickers, veteran Jason Sanders, second-year Ben Sauls and rookie Dominic Zvada, split reps throughout the week.

* The players get a long weekend through Memorial Day. They will be back on the field next week with practices Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
