The main event of tonight’s (May 22) episode of SmackDown featured WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Sami Zayn. The match came about after a backstage segment where Rhodes rejected Zayn’s offer to help him deal with GUNTHER, only for Rhodes to overhear a frustrated Sami talking trash about him afterwards.
The finish of their match saw GUNTHER interfere, of course. With the referee distracted, the Ring General got on the ring apron and tried to put Rhodes to sleep. Zayn did the right thing by his friend when he charged in there to knock GUNTHER down. At least that’s one interpretation of what happened.
Cody showed his appreciation by…grabbing Zayn from behind and finishing him with Cross Rhodes for the pin fall win.
That blow must have smartened Sami up, though, because when GUNTHER got back in there to put Cody to sleep again, Sami turned his back on Cody and walked out of the ring.
