Callum Roberts to depart the Iron

Scunthorpe United can confirm attacker Callum Roberts will leave the Iron in order to sign for an EFL club in the coming days.

The 29-year-old arrived at the club three years ago for an undisclosed fee from Aberdeen with the Iron assisting the dynamic and creative winger to reinvigorate his career to become one of the side’s standout attacking talents over the course of his stay and in recent seasons.

Coming through the academy system at Newcastle United, Roberts will be remembered for his crucial goals and assists, and his significant contributions to the Iron’s promotion back to the National League in 2024-25, he would often create moments of quality in the final third with his wand of a left foot, providing a number of memorable moments.

At the conclusion of 2024-25, after putting to bed an initial campaign of frustration, he scooped the majority of the end of season accolades en route to promotion from National League North, and was the club’s top goalscorer, scoring 20 league goals in his 43 appearances, 41 of which were starts, inclusive of the promotion semi-final.

That form continued into the season just ended, with a further 48 appearances, 45 of which were starts in all competitions, where he provided a total of 32 goal contributions, with 21 of those goals. In achieving both figures in front of goal, he finished top of the charts for the club, and was joint third in the list of appearances.

Recently he went down in Scunthorpe United history, becoming the first ever player to retain the Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy for the club’s overall player of the season. Listed among legends of the club, his name is etched twice into those history books, something that had previously never been achieved.

With the club tabling an offer for Callum in a bid for him to remain for a fourth season, the Iron understand Roberts turned down a number of offers for his services following the end of the season, despite a number of which being much more lucrative than we could offer, however this latest offer was one too good of an opportunity for the outgoing attacker to turn down, and he departs with our well wishes, an abundance of memories and a fantastic legacy in claret and blue.

We would like to thank Callum for his outstanding contribution to our recent history, for providing a number of memorable moments which will live with us forever, and above all being a fantastic professional throughout his time with us.

As with all of our departing players, the door always remains open, and we look forward to seeing Callum flourishing back in the EFL. Good luck for the future, Cal!
