Austin-area election results for the Texas primary runoffs

It’s Election Day for the 2026 primary runoffs in Texas. Early results were released shortly after polls closed at 7 p.m.

In the Democratic primary for the State Board of Education District 5 seat, which covers much of the Austin area, Allison Bush has a slight lead over Stephanie Limon Bazan. The winner faces Republican nominee Mica Arellano in November. The State Board of Education creates policies for Texas public schools.

In Hays County, Michelle Gutierrez Cohen is in the lead over incumbent Ruben Becerra in the Democratic race for Hays County judge. The winner will face Republican Geoffrey Tahuahua in November.

In Williamson County, David McDonald is leading Jeff Mayes in the Republican runoff for county commissioner for Precinct 2. No Democrat ran in the primary, so whoever wins the runoff wins the seat.

Statewide, Attorney General Ken Paxton has defeated incumbent John Cornyn in the Republican race for U.S. Senate, according to The Associated Press. The winner faces Austin state Rep. James Talarico in November.

In the Democratic runoff for lieutenant governor, Austin state Rep. Vikki Goodwin has a commanding lead over Marcos Isaias Velez. The winner faces incumbent Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in November.

Austin-area Congressman Chip Roy is trailing behind Mayes Middleton in the Republican Texas attorney general’s race. Nathan Johnson is leading Joe Jaworski in the Democratic runoff.

This election covers races where no candidate was able to get more than 50% of the vote in the March primary. The top two candidates compete in the runoff, and the winner makes it to the November general election.
